Leslie County Fish and Game Club

Every year, for the past 52 years, the Leslie County Fish & Game Club has sponsored the Fish and Wildlife Day. It is a day, where community members unite under their love for fishing and hunting. Families come from all over to partake in events such as water races, treeing contest, greased pig, terrapin races, Coon on the Log, and several other engaging events. Spectators are also welcomed to come and enjoy fish and chicken dinners, door prizes, and a grand prize of a complete camping outfit.

The history of this event is rooted in the origins of the Leslie County Fish & Game Club. The club was founded by James Mosely (President), Lloyd Turner (Vice President), Boyd Maggard (Secretary), Estill Deaton, Gover Sizemore, Ebert Sizemore, Marcus Turner, John Lewis Elvin Witt, Eddie J. Moore, Woodrow Sizemore, and Rufus Rugate. The founders originally came together in a contest to discover whose dog was the best hunter. As the years progressed the men decided to make the contest a public event. They decided to offer awards to dog owners who had the best barks, the most barks, and the fastest swimmer.

Today the town of Hyden preserves the memory of these founding fathers. Community members are welcomed to become a part of this history by joining the club. For more information or to join come to the club meetings held every first Monday of the month or contact Connie Sizemore at Leslieconservation@yahoo.com.
