There are many historic sites to visit in Leslie County. Many of these sites are directly tied to Mrs. Mary Breckinridge, founder of the Frontier Nursing Service. In fact, onsite classes for the world-renowned Frontier Nursing University are held on the grounds of some of these historic sites.
The Big House at Wendover

DirectionsThe “Big House” at Wendover, Home of Mary Breckinridge, Founder of FNS, take exit 44 (Hyden Spur) off the Daniel Boone Parkway onto Hwy. 118; drive 1.5 miles to intersection of 421/80, turn left at red light; travel through town South on Hwy 421 for 2 miles. Turn left and cross bridge onto Wendover Road; drive 2.5 miles to FNS Drive, turn left. Offices of FNS and The Big House are located on FNS Drive.
Old Hyden Hospital and Midwifery School
Directions:Old Hyden Hospital and FNS School of Midwifery—Take exit 44 (Hyden Spur) off the Daniel Boone Parkway onto Hwy. 118; turn left at light and drive through town, turn left at first red light onto Hwy. 257; turn left onto Hickory Street (second left); drive up the hill, turn right onto School Street. Hospital and school is on the left.
St. Christopher's Chapel
Built on the grounds of the Frontier Nursing Service is St. Christopher's Chapel. Of particular interest is the beautiful stained glass featured in the building.
